Remote and Rural Home Design: How We Work with Clients Across the Southwest

You shouldn't have to drive to Bunbury every time you want to discuss your house design. We work with clients across the full Southwest region, from Manjimup to Augusta to Busselton, using a process built for regional clients who can't always be in the room.

One of the practical realities of the Southwest is its geography. Our region stretches from Bunbury south to Augusta and across toward Albany, taking in farmland, coastal hinterland, and genuinely remote rural properties. Not everyone can easily drop into an office, and modern building design practice doesn't require it.+

How remote project delivery works in practice

•      Initial consultation by phone or video — we review available site information, lot dimensions, topography, local planning scheme zoning, aerial imagery, before the conversation, so it's substantive from the first call.

•      Site visit where practical — for most projects, at least one site visit early in the design process is valuable. For rural properties, understanding the views, the access, the wind exposure, and the microclimate informs decisions that can't be made from a plan.

•      Digital design development — plans are shared as PDFs and reviewed via video call with screen sharing. This is often more convenient than in-person meetings and allows clients to review at their own pace.

•      Remote DA and permit lodgement — development applications and building permit submissions are lodged digitally with councils across the region. We can manage the authority process entirely on your behalf.

What's different about designing for rural and remote sites

•      Bushfire exposure — rural properties are frequently in BAL-rated areas. The vegetation type, density, slope, and access all affect the design approach significantly.

•      On-site wastewater — without sewer connection, wastewater management needs to be designed into the site layout from the beginning, not retrofitted after the house position is fixed.

•      Water supply — some rural properties rely on rainwater tanks, bores, or scheme water with limited pressure. These affect the house design and servicing strategy in ways suburban design doesn't encounter.

•      Power supply and off-grid options — remote properties may be off-grid or have limited grid connection. The trend toward solar-battery systems has made off-grid and hybrid power a genuinely viable option for rural Southwest builds.

•      Wind and weather exposure — rural and coastal properties are more exposed than suburban sites. This affects structural wind load categories, material specification, and outdoor area design.

Council relationships across the region

We have established experience working with the planning and building departments across the Southwest, including the City of Bunbury, Shire of Busselton, Shire of Augusta-Margaret River, Shire of Capel, Shire of Dardanup, Shire of Manjimup, and Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes. Understanding how each council operates, their preferred submission formats, their typical turnaround times, and the local policies they apply, means we can manage the process efficiently regardless of where your property is.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you design a home on a property I've only described to you?

We can begin the design process with plans, photographs, and available data, but we'd recommend at least one site visit before finalising the design. The site itself always reveals things that plans don't show. For very remote properties, we can stage the engagement: a desktop feasibility first, then a site visit at the appropriate point.

Do you charge more for rural or remote projects?

Travel costs for site visits to locations beyond our immediate service area are possible. Design fees are based on the scope and complexity of the project rather than the location. We're transparent about any additional costs at the outset.

Can you manage the whole project from design to permit for a rural property?

Yes, this is a core part of what we do. We can manage the full process from initial site assessment through design development, development application (where required), and building permit documentation.

Wherever you are in the Southwest, we can help you get your project designed and approved. Reach out at projects@fastlanedesign.com.au
